What looked like the biggest achievement for Mexican law enforcement in years turned out to be a big “oops.” Al Jazeera reports.

“…the Mexican navy identified that man as Jesus Alfredo Guzman. But identity tests carried out by prosecutors proved that he’s actually Felix Beltran and he’s a worker at a used car dealership.”

Mexican officials paraded Felix Beltran Leon in front of the media — claiming he was the son of Joaquin “Shorty” Guzman — the country’s biggest drug lord. BBC sayswithin hours of the arrest, doubt started being cast on the official version of events.

“A lawyer proclaiming to speak for the Guzman family released a statement denying that the suspect in custody was the drug boss’s son…(Felix) Leon’s mother then spoke to journalists and denied any link to Joaquin Guzman or the Sinaloa cartel…”

The Sinaloa cartel controls much of the flow of cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine to the United States. According to U.S. court documents the drug lord’s son — Jesus Guzman  — was caught in taped conversations discussing heroin shipments for his father. The Sydney Morning Herald has a quote from the Mexican Navy.

“‘Intelligence sources say (Jesus) Guzman… was co-ordinating the movements of most drugs sent to the United States by the Sinaloa cartel…(Jesus) Guzman…was taking an increasing amount of control of the Sinaloa cartel operations.’”

The Herald Sun reports Mexico’s president has been criticized in the past for going too easy on Joaquin Guzman. And this capture might’ve been politically motivated.

“With less than 10 days to go before Mexicans go to the polls to elect a new president, the [incumbent]is trailing far behind [the] front runner … ”

Joaquin Guzman has been ducking Mexican authorities since his 2001 escape from a maximum-security prison — in a laundry basket. The elder Guzman is listed by Forbes as one of the richest men in the world.

Lipstick, bubbles, and makeup — not exactly the first things that come to mind when discussing science. However, those are all displayed in the European Commission’scontroversial video for its “Girls in Science” campaign.

The goal of the video is to attract more women to a career in science. According to commission officials, the video had to -quote “speak their language to get their attention” and that it was intended to be “Fun, catchy and strike a chord with young people.”

The EU campaign stems from the lack of women in research careers and aims to get girls interested at a young age. The Register explains.

“The EU have clearly acknowledged that there is a problem with getting women into areas like science and technology. Issues such as educational bias, the lack of role-models and certain sorts of institutional sexism have all been cited as problems in the past…”

But when the video went viral Friday, it was attacked for taking the wrong approach to the problem. A writer for Discover Magazine explains.

“The problem is that whoever made the video clearly starts from the assumption that girls hate actual science, and therefore the route to increasing their interest is to pretend that science is all about lipstick and sunglasses and runway models draped in pink.”

Other critics even labelled the video as sexist for its portrayal of women. As an example, a science blogger at Adventures in Ethics and Science got her 13-year-old daughter’s reaction to the video.

“The only clear scientist in that video was the man. The women in that video didn’t come across as scientists. They were more like giggly models with scientific props.”

The “Girls in Science” campaign has been praised for the other videos they feature on their website, which show real women who work in science. A writer for Knight Science Journalism Tracker says the Commission should have stuck with the “strong role model” approach.

“We absolutely do want more women in science. But we want them because they’re smart, talented, hard-working, capable… And we’ll see their numbers rise …  when those abilities are fully embraced and rewarded.”

As of Saturday afternoon, the Commission had replaced the teaser video on its site with a profile of a woman earning her PhD in virology.

COLUMBIA – Missouri veteran Harvey Fogel is the first person in the state to receive the newest model of prosthetic hand.

Fogel lost all his fingers in December of 1970 in a factory accident while serving in the Navy. For 41 years, he could not complete simple tasks like holding a cup or opening a sugar packet. When he first got his new prosthetic hand, he and his wife sat down and had coffee and he was able to open his own sugar packet. His wife said she will keep the empty sugar packet to remember the moment.

The prosthetic hand uses muscle control to sense when Fogel wants to move. He can use the prosthetic just like a regular hand, but he said he has been without a hand for so long that he still needs to get adjusted. Fogel said he was surprised and is very humbled to have access to the new technology.

Truman VA Hospital said the aim is to improve function to help veterans have a good quality of life.

For my 3 Picture project I want to capture Mizzou students on summer vacation. The pool at my apartment complex is full everyday with college students and I think it would be fun to shed light on what goes on there. Of course a lot of beer drinking and volleyball games, but the summer also provides a time for students to let go and relax. My goal would be to show what college students are up to when they are not being students. The average person that is not a part of my generation would not know what goes on at the wild college pool parties, so I think it would be interesting.

Some obstacles I might run into would be limited access. Students might not want me to take pictures of them drinking. People also tend to act differently when they are in front of a camera and I want to capture people being themselves. I also hope that there would not be any issues with the Grove and the fact that I would be taking pictures.

However, I don’t think students would be camera shy because we all know how people act after a few beers. I think I could get some really great shots of students having fun, laying out and relaxing. As far as people acting differently in front of the camera, I would just combat that by trying to go for more candid shots. I live at the Grove so they wouldn’t have a problem with me being at the pool but if they had an issue with the camera I will leave and go somewhere else.

I thought this was a cool story idea and well composed. I’m still sitting here scratching my head about how they got that shot of the side of the limo driving down the street.
